BRIGGS 1840 1/10/99 I am trying to trace a line of the Briggs family of
Ellenville, Ny, Ulster County. I have a letter dated September 27, 1840 written from E. G.
Briggs to his sister, Hanah Briggs. It was addressed to her at Briggs Street, Ellenville,
NY, Ulster County. I am assuming that she still lived there with her parents? He was in
Jacksonville, Florida at the time writing. My 3great grandmother was Mary
"Briggs" Westcott and I believe that somehow she was related to these Briggs, E.
G. and Hanah as the letter is written by an ancestor of mine. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Ruth Clark

BROWN, Jacob Parents of? (8/24/98) Looking for the family (children) of an
Anthony Brown who married Mary Brown in the 1800's. I know of no other specifics of this
couple other than one son - Anthony "Braun" who married Rose Braun (Snyder).
This Anthony Braun's death certificate stated his parents were Anthony and Mary
"BROWN". (above) I would like to know the children of this ancestor as it
appears the name changed. The Anthony Braun (married to Rose) born in 1858, died May 6,
1896. Can you tell me the children of the Anthony and Mary Brown? I believe at least one
to be a Jacob Brown born Jan. 1858, died Kingston New York (Ulster County), Dec 30, 1935.
Jacob is my Great-grand father. The Anthony and Rose Braun also lived and died in
Kingston, New York. Jim Brown
. BROWN 4/24/99 - I am searching for information about the parents of Severn A.
BROWN, born April 24, 1799 in Ulster County. He is referenced in "The Michael
Shoemaker Book" on page 611, which is mostly concerned with his mother, listed as
Mary (May) Brown-Phenix. Mary married first a (unknown first name) Brown and second,
Matthew Phenix; three of her children by her first marriage were Severn, John (birthdate
unknown), and Fanny (born June 26, 1803 in Delaware, NY). Mary's first husband assumed to
have died between 1802 and 1804, because first child (Sarah) of Mary and Matthew Phenix
was born July 8, 1805. Matthew Phenix was a resident of Wyoming County, PA; am assuming
Mary removed there with her children, but unknown if husband died before or after family
moved. I have a strong belief that Severn Brown is a name used heavily among this family;
Severn had a namesake, a grandson. His first born son was named John W.; other sons named
Isaac, Asa and Thomas. I recently located at switchboard.com, a Severn Brown in Canton,
NY. I have much information about the descendants and would be willing to share. Thanks
for any help. ReddogDee@aol.com

. DECKER 08-26-99) I have been researching two of the four DECKER families that
first settled in America. The family of Jan Gerritse Decker settled in Kingston, New York
before 1665 and thereafter at Rochester, Ulster County. The second family of Jan Broerse
Decker settled in Kingston before 1658 and then in Marbleton, Ulster County. Many members
of both families then migrated down the "Minisink" into the delaware Valley. My
question is this and only refers to Ulster County. On todays maps of Ulster County there
appears to be towns and townships. For example there is the Town of ESOPUS and a larger
area showing what I believe is referred to as Township of ESOPUS in Ulster County. There
is also a Town of Marbletown in the larger area of the Township of Marbletown. However, in
the Township of Rochester there does not appear to be a specific town called Rochester.
(Having grown up in the New York I am well aware of the city of Rochester, and am not
reffering to that). Does anyone know if there ever was a Town (not a township) called
Rochester elseware in Ulster County? The early records I have refer to the Rochester
Reformed Dutch Church (Ulster County) and my assumption was that that Church was in what
is today the Township of Rochester (Ulster County). Any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated. Tom Oberst, 27 Snow Street,

GRIFFIN - 1/22/99 GRIFFIN - I am looking for information on my family tree. What
I have so far is the following from an 1896 book entitled "Commemorative Biographical
Record Of Ulster County": my gggg-grandfather Griffin (first name unknown) married
Thena Pelham, both native of Delaware County, and had children William, Joseph, Pelham,
Green, Levi, James, Ezekiel, Sarah, Rachel, Emeline, Eli and Daniel. My ggg-grandfather
William Griffin (1793 - ?) was born near Griffin's Corners and married Jane Rogers (1805 -
1888) who was born in Shandaken. William and Jane had children Henry W. and John (and
George?). John married Jane Crispell and had children Jean, Josephine, Sarah, George,
Effie and David. It is possible that John and Jane owned the Arkville "Griffin and
Crispell hotel" as mentioned in a Dewitt B. Cole sketch found elsewhere. My
gg-grandfather Henry W. Griffin (1/1/1827 - ?) was also born near Griffin's Corners and
was married 1/16/1850 to Catherine J. Smith (9/16/1831 - ?). Henry and Catherine had
children Ezra (7/12/1858 - ?), Lester (1/4/1851 - 2/2/1892), Delbert (11/30/1862 - ?),
Alice M. (12/2/1855 - ?) and Emma (5/13/1869 - ?). Attention:

GRIFFIN 3/20/99 I am looking for information on the parents of Martin Griffin,
born in 1777 or 1778. I believe his parents were Martin (or Martinus) Griffin and Rachel
Soper. Martin and Rachel had several children: Charity, Laurence, John, David, Leah,
Andrias, Martinus (Martin), Caty, Jannetje and Jacob). Martin Griffin (the son) purchased
land in Ontario County, New York in 1803, the year he married Elizabeth Carter. They had
five children and moved to Ohio in and around 1815. Given the name of some of their
children, I have reason to believe that Martin Griffin was related ito the Soper and Himes
families (one child was named Oran(ge) Soper Griffin; another Benjamin Himes Griffin).
There are Sopers and Himes both in Ulster and Ontario Counties. Ron Krupovich
